The Vanuatu government has receiving a total of 103 applications have been received by the Citizenship Office, during Jan 2024, from foreigners seeking to obtain Vanuatu citizenship. This despite visa requirement imposed by UK and EU schengen countries citing, poor vetting with the program. The discussions are currently ongoing to restore the visa free access to Vanuatu citizens.
- July 2023, – UK suspended visa free access to Vanuatu nationals.
- Feb 2023 – EU suspended visa free access to Vanuatu nationals until Aug 4, 2024.
The data of citizenship cases, was revealed by the Prime Minister (PM), Charlot Salwai, during discussions regarding the budget allocation for Citizenship Office in Parliament. These applicants are applying for different citizenship program, including Citizenship by Investment, Capital Investment Immigration Plan (CIIP) and the Development Support Program (DSP).
The citizenship program has become the government’s biggest revenue generator, overtaking VAT income. The funds are used to finance national investments.
